Wireless Networks

The term wireless networking refers to any technology that enables two or more computers to communicate using standard network protocols, but without the use of network cabling.

The most popular use of wireless networks is for the purpose of sharing files, printers and your broadband Internet connection across multiple computers, without the inconvenience of having to run wires from room to room.

For most homes, small offices and home offices a wireless network is going to be the easiest and most cost affective method of implementing a network, however there are some things to consider.

  • Typical indoor range is 150-300 feet, but can be shorter if the building construction interferes with radio transmissions. (Longer ranges are possible, but performance will degrade with distance.)
  • Typical outdoor range is up to 1000 feet, but again this depends upon the environment.
  • Most hardware access points have a limit of 10 users. (Access points supporting up to 100 wireless connections are available)
